The semester and academic year curriculum combines Swahili Language & Culture course with a wide selection of discipline-specific courses (taught in English), internships and/or community service. Courses are held at the University of Dar-es-Salaam (UDES), Muhimbili University College of Health Sciences (MUCH) and KiSwahili na Utamaduni (KIU). KEI students are integrated with Tanzanian and international students at the university. Internships and community service are organized at various companies, media outlets, NGOs, humanitarian organizations, schools, museums, laboratories and clinics.

CURRICULUM & CREDIT
The Swahili Language & Culture course (6 semester credits) is required. This course is taught intensively during the first month of the program (before other classes start). It introduces students to Swahili language and Tanzanian culture and society. Most cultural excursions and activities included with the program are integrated with this course.

Students can enroll in up to 18 credits per semester in addition to the Swahili Language & Culture course. KEI offers optional Intensive Swahili courses for a total of 90 hours per semester (additional fee applies). Students who choose this option enroll in 6 credits of Swahili Language (taught by KIU) plus up to 12 credits at UDES or MUCHS.

Most courses offered by UDSM and MUCH are 3 semester credits. Science and clinical courses with a lab are 4 credits. Internships are 3 to 6 credits, depending on time commitment. Community service is not awarded academic credit. Program transcripts are issued by UDES, MUCHS and KEI/KIU. Transcripts from KEI's university of record (accredited in the USA) are also available for courses offered by UDES and MUCHS.

COURSES & SILLABI
Academic subjects offered by each faculty at UDES and MUCHS are listed below. Click on the faculty or department name to download a PDF file with the course offerings. These PDF files were adapted from the curriculum prospectus from each faculty. Students should only focus on courses offered and disregard all other information.

Course descriptions and syllabi are provided below (links) for most courses/departments. Contact KEI for descriptions/syllbi that are not listed on this website. Please be patient as it may take 2 to 4 weeks to obtain course descriptions (and syllabi when available). UDES does not have a digitized system for course information, so much of the work must be done manually and through direct contact with each professor at UDES.

The summer curriculum offers Swahili language and culture courses (taught in English) and internships (business, media, humanitarian, clinical, research, etc.). Courses are held at the University of Dar-es-Salaam (UDES), but taught by KiSwahili na Utamaduni (KIU) instructors. Internships are organized at various companies, NGOs, humanitarian organizations and clinics. Program transcripts are issued by KEI/KIU.

The curriculum depends on the option selected:

  • OPTION 1: Swahili Language & Culture course.
This course consists of two modules: Swahili Language and East African Culture.
    6 credits
    Duration: 1 month

  • OPTION 2: Swahili Language & Culture course, PLUS part-time internship.
9 credits: 6 credits for course plus 3 credits for internship
    Duration: 2 months
NOTE: It is possible to participate in an internship with out enrolling in the course. Students who choose this option will receive a $1000 discount from their program fee.
KEI offers four types of internships:
  • PROFESSIONAL internships are organized with local and multinational companies, law firms and NGOs.

  • HUMANITARIAN internships are organized with not-for-profit-organizations, orphanages, schools and community organizations.

  • CLINICAL internships are organized at the Muhimbili Hospital and affiliated clinics.

  • RESEARCH internships can be organized with UDES faculty in the social sciences, natural sciences, environmental sciences and animal/wildlife sciences and management.

Placement is based on student interests and availability of positions. Internships take time to organize. Many companies and organizations require an in-person interview before making a final decision. Most internships start in the 4th week of the semester and in the 2nd week of the summer program.

Internships require a minimum commitment of 120 hours (3 credits) and can be extended to 240 hours (6 credits). Some positions may require additional hours. Academic credit for professional, humanitarian and clinical internships is awarded by KEI. Credit for research internships is awarded by UDES.

Community service is a good alternative for students who can not commit to the time requirements for internships. Community service hours are flexible. Most community service includes regular visits to underprivileged areas in Dar. Possible placements include orphanages, clinics and humanitarian organizations.
