Each semester and summer, we organize a series of excursions designed to show you the breadth of Tanzanian culture, environment and society. Destinations change often, but the following excursions recur nearly every term.

KEI reserves the right to change planned excursions for destinations of equal value and interest. Excursions may change based on availability, local festivals and interest. Academic year and multiple term students participate on planned excursions during one of their terms.

Dar es Salaam
Students will visit downtown Dar to discover the many contrasts between contemporary and historic Tanzania. Downtown has much to offer, from numerous shops and restaurants, to cultural significant sites and museums, to the busy harbor and business centers.

Bagamoyo Village (day activity)
A small town rich in culture and history, located 75 kilometers north of Dar es Salaam. The town was born out of Kaole town. It was one of the most important trading centers on the East Africa coast during the 18th and 19th centuries. The town boasts of the beginning of the Catholic Church in East Africa and beautiful unspoiled beaches. Visitors enjoy a combination of cultural, historical and natural attractions.

Zanzibar (day activity)
The "Spice Islands" are situated in the Indian Ocean, 36 km off the coastline of mainland Tanzania. Once the trading centre of the whole of East Africa, Zanzibar attracted Sumerians, Assyrians, Phoenicians, Arabs, Chinese and Malays. The great explorers, Burton, Speke, Livingstone and Krapf continued their journeys from these shores.

Zanzibar is characterized by beautiful sandy beaches with fringing coral reefs, warm clear blue waters, idyllic islands, excellent reefs for snorkeling and diving, fantastic deep sea fishing and water sports activities. The historic Stone Town with its narrow winding streets, vivid markets and colorful bazaars makes for an interesting cultural visit. The island is famous for spices such as cloves, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla, cardamom, pepper and others).

Serengeti National Park (extended overnight excursion)
This large nature reserve is adjacent to the Maasai Mara National Park in Kenya. Serengeti is the traditional home to the Maasai people, a tribe known for their proximity to nature and the land. Maasai life centers around their cattle, which is the main source of food and wealth. The name come from the maasai 'Siringet,' meaning endless plains. Various types of vegetation, including grassy plains, savannah with acacias, wooded hill and mountains, attract an extraordinary concentration of animals to the park.
