BioCEP is a cooperative effort by Columbia University's Center for Bioethics, Symbiosis International University and Knowledge Exchange Institute. The program's primary objective is to help students understand how culture and religion influence controversial issues related to Bioethics and medical ethics including: emerging infections (Swine flu, HIV, SARS, and malaria), the integration of Western and Eastern medicines, medical tourism, stem cell research, organ transplantation, informed consent, malnutrition, abortion, public health, genetic testing, and reproductive medicine. American students are integrated with European and Asian students.

Students enroll in the Cross-Cultural Bioethics, and Medical Diplomacy & Anthropology courses. The curriculum combines lectures, seminars, professional visits and clinical internship. Lectures and seminars are led by professors and guest speakers from Columbia University, Symbiosis International University, various NGOs and health organizations in India. Internships are available in business, marketing, finance, information technology, computer science, international relations, journalism, media, tourism, hospitality, environment, medicine, health administration and humanitarian aid. Students are placed in local and international companies, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), schools and humanitarian aid organizations. Medical and health administration internships are arranged at community clinics and hospitals.

Internships require a minimum commitment of 120 hours (3 credits), term paper and regular meetings with an internship supervisor. Many companies/organizations require a commitment of 240 or more hours (6 credits). Internships are organized as an add-on to the semester program. Internships require an extended stay in Pune (2 months/semester and 1 month/summer session).

Students can also participate in community service at humanitarian organizations, schools, orphanages and other organizations. Community service does not require a minimum commitment; schedules are more flexible than for internships. There is no credit for community service. Students who need academic credit should consider the internship option.
