The semester and academic year curriculum offers a wide selection of courses combined with an optional internship. Courses are held at the Symbiosis International University (SIU). KEI and Indian students are integrated in the classroom. Most, but not all, courses at SIU are 4 semester credits (60 contact hours). Internships (professional, clinical, independent study, research or community service) require a 2-month extension at the end of the semester. Students can enroll in up to 16 course credits and up to 6 internship credits per semester. Program transcripts are issued by SIU or KEI's university of record (accredited in the USA).

SCLA003 20th Century: Bloodiest Century in Human History (3 cr; History)
The very first decade of the 21st century has witnessed the world's sole superpower involving itself in two seemingly endless wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. The wars were retribution for the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Centre towers in New York. From the American perspective the attacks were a geo-political disaster as they destroyed the American self perception of impregnability. Five centuries of new world insularity were shattered when the conflicts of the old world disembarked on the same coast where the Pilgrim Fathers arrived four centuries ago. The present course seeks to comprehend the evolving relationship between the wars of the 21st century and those of the 20th.

SCLA023 Script to Performance: The Social Dimension (3 cr; Writing/Theater)
Not much consideration or thought is given to the sociological understanding of any creative product such as a play. As far as most of the writers are concerned - even the serious ones - they happily claim that they are politically neutral or 'apolitical'. Literary criticism has a profound tradition of being inclined only towards aesthetical or technical evaluation. At the most it is concerned with the 'logical progression of a story'. Such as 'whether a woman of a specific background will leave her husband under such and such specific conditions, etc'. Hardly any thought is given to the fact that the writer is expressing and urging the readers/spectators towards a particular ideology or viewpoint - whether through a conscious effort or subconsciously. This is true both for practitioners as well as critics. Our academic courses also do not give sufficient weightage to the sociological and political aspects that a particular play or literary piece reflects - whether due to the fact that the writer has made any conscious effort to do so or otherwise. There is no need to point out that ' I am apolitical' as that in itself is a highly political statement, but is usually not understood as such. This is truer in case of theatre, films, and TV serials, as the academic study of these mediums is rather crippled in our conditions. The objective of this course is to try and make the students aware of what kind of socio-political statement the playwright / scriptwriters are making and what kind of worldview is being expressed through the theatre they are creating or witnessing as spectators. Political understanding of a community matures more through the realization of such hidden hegemonies than through the awareness of overt political and social events or ethical norms.

"No statement deserves blind faith and each statement deserves rational enquiry" will be the main idea based on which we will discuss the nature of Science and its connection with society. I feel this is a rational, democratic way of learning anything, not only issues related to Science. The course enables students to acquire knowledge and understanding of the changing concepts of comprehensive community health practice, the national health care delivery system and to participate in the delivery of community health practice. This course also broadens the understanding in public health administration, responsibility of health professionals for early case finding, health assessment and health education based on principles of primary health care, system process approach and comprehensive care to the individual, family and community. The course combines in-class instruction (4 cr; 60 hours) with clinical internship (3 cr; 140 hours). The practical component is conducted during the semester. Students may choose to extend their internship for 2 months at the end of the semester for additional credit. KEI offers three summer options. The program curriculum depends on the option selected. Program transcripts are issued by SIU or KEI's university of record (accredited in the USA).

INDIA STUDY TOUR (3 credits; late May to mid June)
This program combines travel to different destination in India with an Indian Studies course. The itinerary starts in northern India (Delhi, Agra, Jaipur) and ends in central India (Mumbai, Pune). The course is led by a professor from the State University of New York, University at Albany.

SUMMER SESSION (6 - 9 credits; mid June to mid July/mid August)
This program combines courses with an optional internship. Courses are held at the Symbiosis International University (SIU). Internships (professional, clinical, independent study, research or community service) require a 1-month extension (until mid August). Students can enroll in up to 6 course credits and up to 3 internship credits. Program transcripts are issued by SIU or KEI's university of record (accredited in the USA).

The following courses are scheduled for the Summer Session. A minimum of 6 students is required to open a course. Course descriptions will be added to this page as they become available. Contact KEI if you need syllabi for credit approval at your home university. Note that course numbers are for reference only, in some cases do not reflect level of the course and may be changed on your program transcript. SCLA001 An Exposure to Indian Philosophy (3 cr; Philosophy)
In this course we will explore our experience of freedom whether real or unreal .We desire freedom, we feel we have it, may be because our country won it sixty years back or we can buy what we want. In what way do we inherit the freedom, if we can inherit it at all, that some others won for themselves?

Isn't it rather we learn to want what we buy? We need to think deeply about this business of freedom. Are individual freedoms destined to clash with each other? Can we share our freedom and increase it? We may know what we are free from do we know what we are free for? We shall think about these questions methodically in this course.

SCLA037 The Living Past: Comprehending India (3 cr; History)
Living in a world that is rapidly changing one is often faced with a stark question regarding the nature and objective of human life. At such times, a remarkable discipline that assists the search for this nature and objective is History. History has often been seen as a study of the past and nothing about this discipline can be farther from the truth. History is about us, here and now. In that situation all ways of thinking about the past need to be directed to investigate the 'present' necessity of enquiring into the 'past. The following course aims to do so by involving the learner in a rather comprehensive inquiry into the nature and objective of the present probing the past.

SCLA026 Cinema and Ideology (3 cr; Media Studies)
Cinema like any other cultural entity has a specific relation to ideology. The beliefs, ideas, values, roles and images that tie a society together find reflection in art and other cultural products. Thus, cinema, like other cultural products, forms, reinforces as well as challenges the dominant ideology of society. Our notions of our self, the self and the other, masculinity and femininity, citizenship and nationality find expression in films that are consumed as pure entertainment. Cinema is the most popular form of cultural expression and therefore plays a pivotal role in shaping the consciousness of a people. Hence, a course that will enable students to become a critically intelligent audience should prove valuable.

SCLA029 Understanding Indian Classical Dance (3 cr; Dance)
The central task of liberal education is to activate each students mind to develop the task of being able to independently make choices and actions, alternative perspectives etc. rather than blindfolded acceptance of conventional assumptions. The purpose of this course is to teach students about a wide variety of subjects and its relations to contemporary issues, to think clearly and COMMUNICATE effectively. This course will also help develop both analytical and writing skills, evaluation abilities, logical thinking and reasoning correctly. All these aspects will help students learn to explore and attain an understanding of those aspects of human expressions which is a crucial part of dance.

SCLA051 Hindi Language - Beginner (3 cr)
Hindi is a modern Indo-Aryan language spoken in South Asian countries (India, Pakistan, Nepal) and also in other countries outside Asia (Mauritius, Trinidad, Fiji, Surinam, Guyana, South Africa and other countries). Approximately six hundred million people speak Hindi, as either a first or second language. It is ranked among the five most widely spoken languages of the world. This Hindi course, for beginners, is designed to develop aural ability, oral facility, reading and comprehension.

SCLA052 Hindi Language -Intermediate (3 cr)
Continuation of Hindi Language.
Prerequisites: Hindi Language (Beginner) or equivalent

SUMMER TERM (9 - 12 credits; late May to mid July/mid August)
This program option combines the India Study Tour and the Summer Session. Students have the option of enrolling in the Summer Session with or without the internship.

Internships are available in business, marketing, finance, information technology, computer science, international relations, journalism, media, tourism, hospitality, environment, medicine, health administration and humanitarian aid. Students are placed in local and international companies, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), schools and humanitarian aid organizations. Medical and health administration internships are arranged at community clinics and hospitals.

Internships require a minimum commitment of 120 hours (3 credits), term paper and regular meetings with an internship supervisor. Many companies/organizations require a commitment of 240 or more hours (6 credits). Internships are organized as an add-on to the semester program. Internships require an extended stay in Pune (2 months/semester and 1 month/summer session).

Students can also participate in community service at humanitarian organizations, schools, orphanages and other organizations. Community service does not require a minimum commitment; schedules are more flexible than for internships. There is no credit for community service. Students who need academic credit should consider the internship option.
