The semester and summer curriculum in Cuzco offers courses and community service.
Courses are offered at Universidad San Ignacio de Loyola (USIL).
Community service is organized at various NGOs and humanitarian organizations.
Students can enroll in a maximum of 15 credits per semester and 6 credits per summer session.
Courses are 3 credits.
Spanish Language & Peruvian/Andean Studies
Beginning Spanish
This course aims to give students the necessary abilities for quick and effective written / oral communication in common situations, through the development of a basic vocabulary that allows them to face diverse situations, such as giving information about their family, work and place where they live under different circumstances, in the present and in the past.
Pre-Intermediate Spanish
This course aims to give students the necessary abilities for quick and effective written / oral communication in common situations, through the development of a basic vocabulary that allows them to face diverse situations, such as giving information about their family, work and place where they live under different circumstances, in the present and in the past.
Intermediate Spanish
This Spanish course is intended to provide students with the abilities needed for communicating rapidly and effectively in common situations, both verbally and in writing, developing a basic vocabulary that enables a student to handle situations such as giving information about the press, expressing feelings and carrying on conversations in different places, both in the past and present.
Advanced Spanish
This Spanish course is intended to provide students with the abilities needed for communicating rapidly and effectively in common situations, both verbally and in writing, developing a basic vocabulary that enables a student to handle situations such as giving information about his/her family, work and place of residence, both in the past and present.
Quencha Language
The course is introduction to the Quechua language, a language widely spoken by natives in the Andes. This course is designed to engage students in the communicative use of the four language skills (reading, writing, speaking and listening) at a basic level.
Latin American Literature (Spanish)
This theoretical-practical-oriented course develops students skills in order to read critically and value Latin American Literature textbooks through detailed analysis of poetry and novels. Open to students in/with Advanced Spanish.
Introduction to Communications (Spanish)
The course is theoretical-practical. The course will present an overview of the different types of mass media, using dynamic and continuous practice; In the end of the course, it will show the role of a communicator in companies and institutions.
Written Communications (Spanish)
The purpose of this course is to train students to produce coherent texts. Topics such as fundamentals of texts production, writing strategies, coherence in text linguistics and language policies will be covered in different classes.
Intercultural Communications (SPanish)
Theoretical and applied course that introduces students to the knowledge of intercultural communication. In the end of the course the student will be able to analyze and appreciate their own identity and produce text that will work effectively across cultural differences.
International Trade: Imports and Exports (Spanish)
This course is theoretical and practical.
Its purpose is to allow the student to understand and recognize the different production, commercial, cultural and social factors and how they interact in a dynamic globalized world.
The student will learn to identify the various commercial barriers at an international level and to understand the significance of a free market economy in order to analyze the various related themes, to make sound investment decisions in foreign markets.
Business in Peru & Latin America (English)
This course is structured in 3 different modules: The Peruvian Economy, Marketing Experiences and Trade Opportunities
The objective of the first module is to introduce the student to the Peruvian economy, the political and economic forces shaping business activities, and the national challenges ahead to obtain social progress. The objective of the second module is to present and analyze the most successful Peruvian marketing strategies in the last years including: Business objectives, market segmentation and 4 P’s of marketing strategies. The third module introduces students to key political and economic issues in Peru, as well as important information of Latin America, - which pose interesting trading opportunities for the country.
Sustainable Tourism (English)
Tourism is a major player in the world's economy and more recently in Peruvian economy. This course will enable students to better understand the pros and cons of the tourism industry, using real life situations including protected areas, local community involvement and politics. At the end of the semester students will propose a sustainable solution for a current problem.
Photography in Cuzco (English)
Theoretical and practical course geared toward learning the photographic production process, including the study of visual treatment, lighting and mastery of digital photography resources.
Art & Design in Cuzco (English)
The course is aimed at critical analysis of the history of Cuzco's art from a visual perspective, creating new spaces for reflection.
Artistic expressions from the different periods of its cultural development are studied and interpreted, within the framework of their particular contexts of time and space.
The course work is geared toward distinguishing constants and technical, stylistic and plastic variants that characterize the different cultural periods, establishing general guidelines for analysis and assessment.
In addition, the history of Cuzco's architecture, painting and sculpture are covered through analysis of the most significant works.
In the second part of the course, there will be guided visits in order to experience history through the different artistic expressions found in this imperial city.
Contemporary Society & Culture of Peru (English)
The purpose of this course is to present the historical transformation of Peruvian society. The course will cover topics like Andean, Occidental, African and Amazonian traditions. In the end of the course students will be able to understand the Peruvian history from the beginning the Independent period up to the current days.
History of the Inca Civilization (English)
The course focuses on the largest and the most powerful political entity of the Ancient Americas and its precursors in the Central Andean region. It covers the key aspects of the Inca statecraft, economy, religion, art and technology, as well as the history and methods of their study. Along with lectures and seminars, it offers a number of field trips and visits to archaeological sites. The USIL building is situated inside an Inca architectural compound in the very heart of Cusco, the ancient capital of the Inca Empire.
Andean Nutrition (English)
The purpose of this theory and application course is to familiarize students with the nutritional wealth of Andean crops and their significance in the population's nutrition, comparing them with other crops and their influence and importance regarding the world food supply. Healthy recipes will be developed using these products as ingredients. Lastly, we will review the type of Andean crops being exported to the USA, Europe, etc.
Biodiversity of Peru (English)
Since Peru has a mega biodiversity which enables it to be among the top-12 most biodiverse countries in the world, this theoretical course will mainly focus on developing skills to analyze and value the components of biodiversity, identifying its potentials and the tools to make this sustainable use and conservation possible.
Healing & Shamanism in the Andean and Amazonian Culture (English)
The Peruvian pre-Hispanic civilizations taught us the value of the healing and its strong link with medicine. The course is aimed at the critical analysis of pre-Hispanic Peruvian history and its connection with modern times with special emphasis on the spiritual relationship with the Earth and the use of ancient medicine.
Inca Architecture (English)
The course introduces the quantitative and qualitative aspects of the architecture evolution and urban planning in the Andes - South America. It covers conceptual aspects of Andean society's evolution, geography and environment.
Service (not-for-credit) allows students to learn from practical experience and engage with the local community.
