Internships allow students to test their knowledge against real-life situations and gain practical insight into the host culture. KEI offers four types of internships: professional, clinical, research and community service. Placement is based on the students professional interests and availability of positions.

KEI views internships as an extension of the academic experience. Internship positions are not paid.

Guidelines & Policies
Since organizations have different policies regarding internships, there is no set guideline for arranging placements. However, KEI adheres to the following principles and policies as much as possible. (Download the Internship Guidelines for detailed information.)
  1. Students must indicate their interest in an internship on the Credit Approval Form. Make sure to include the following information:
    • Professional interests (list several)
    • Minimum time requirement
    • Proficiency in the language of the host country

  2. KEI will make preliminary arrangements with the host organization (company, NGO, hospital, laboratory, etc.).
    • KEI will contact organizations only after the student registers for the program.
    • Placement is done on a rolling basis. Students who apply, enroll and register early will be placed first.
    • Whenever possible, placement is organized prior to arrival.

  3. The company has final say about accepting the intern.
    • Although KEI is successful in placing students, internships are not guaranteed since many organizations require an in-person interview before making a final decision.
    • Students are advised to register for additional courses in case the internship does not work out.
    • Most internships start in the second to fourth week of the semester.
    • Students are responsible for transportation to and from the internship organization/company.

  4. Academic credit is awarded under the following conditions:
    • Students must report to the supervising professor regularly
    • Students must keep and submit a daily journal
    • Students must complete a term paper or project
    • 1 semester credit is awarded for every 40 contact hours.
    • A minimum commitment of 120 hours (3 cr.) is required
    • Students should always check with their home institution first, concerning home school requirements for the awarding of credit for internships! Credit for internships requires home school approval. Universities often have strict regulations about academic credit for internships.
Some program locations have specific requirements and guidelines. Visit individual program pages for more information regarding internships at that location.
