HOME ACADEMICS: TRANSFER CREDIT

Transfer Credit is academic credit earned during your KEI program. Academic credit is awarded for courses and internships, and can usually be applied towards graduation requirements at your home university. Since KEI programs offer a wide selection of courses in specific major, minor and general education concentrations, you should be able to study abroad and graduate without any delays.

KEI programs offer undergraduate and graduate level credit, depending on the courses/internships selected. Students must enroll in graduate-level courses and internships to receive graduate credit.

Academic credit earned during your KEI program is awarded by the host university or co-sponsoring institution. With most programs, students also have the option of receiving credit from KEI's university of record (accredited in the USA). There are no additional fees for the university of record credit, but you must inform KEI before the program.

Your home university will determine which courses and internships will be approved for credit transfer, how the credit will count towards your graduation, and the type of program credit preferred (host university or university of record). We strongly recommend that you start the credit approval process by meeting with the academic and study abroad advisors at your university. If you are not enrolled at a college or university at the time of your KEI program, you will still earn program credit that you may arrange to transfer at a later date.

High school students participating on KEI's summer enrichment programs earn college credit. Many universities in the USA will transfer the program credit after matriculation is complete, similar to Advanced Placement (AP) credit earned in high school. Make sure to verify credit transfer with the Admission Office of the college you plan to attend.
The credit transfer process involves three steps. If you are not sure where to begin, just ask a KEI advisor.

STEP 1:
Have the academic and/or study abroad advisor at your university complete KEI's Credit Approval Form or a similar form provided by your university. Meet with your advisor as soon as possible. Make sure to bring the KEI catalogue and syllabi for courses you plan to take abroad. Syllabi can be downloaded from this web site (check individual program pages). If you don't see the syllabus you need, contact us.

TIP: You should select and approve at least 3 alternate courses for your program. For example, if you plan to take 5 courses, you should have 8 courses approved for credit transfer. Having alternate courses will allow you to drop/add during the first week of the program. It will also set your mind at rest in case one or more of the courses is cancelled by the host institution.

STEP 2:
Successfully complete your course and/or internship requirements. Some universities require a minimum grade to transfer credit. Make sure to discuss minimum grade requirements with the study abroad and academic advisors at your home university.

STEP 3:
Complete the Transcript Request Form so that we can release your program transcript. KEI programs include one official and one unofficial transcript. The official transcript will be mailed directly to your home university. The unofficial transcript will be mailed to you. Transcripts are sent approximately 3 months after the program to the address indicated on the Transcript Request Form. Students must have a balance of $0 on their KEI student account and submit a program evaluation before transcripts will be released.
