JAPAN TOYO UNIVERSITY

Toyo University is one of the most respected private universities in Japan. Founded in 1877 by Dr. Inoue Enryo, one of Japan’s most celebrated philosophers, Toyo offers a global education through its three pillars of philosophy, internationalization, and career development.

Toyo is spread across 5 campuses of Hakusan, Akabanedai, Kawagoe, Asaka and Itakura. KEI students study at the main Hakusan campus, which is centrally located and offers easy access to Tokyo’s iconic neighborhoods of Shibuya, Akihabara, Ikebukuro, and Shinjuku. The Hakusan campus was designed to facilitate learning and consists of modern buildings surrounded by lush greenery. Sky Hall, the tallest building on campus, offers spectacular views of Mt Fuji and Tokyo cityscape.

The university consists of 14 undergraduate faculties (colleges) and 15 graduate schools. The Hakusan campus includes the Faculties (Colleges) of Letters, Economics, Business Administration, Law, Sociology, Regional Development, Global & Regional Studies, International Tourism Management, Information Networking for Innovation & Design, and Human Life Design. The remaining campuses include the Faculties of Science & Engineering, Information Sciences & Arts, Life Sciences, and Food & Nutritional Sciences.

Toyo is an international university. The university has more than 212 partnerships in Europe, North America, South America, Asia, and Africa. Japanese and international students are integrated in all subject-specific courses. With 31,000 students, of which 1600 are international, KEI program participants get a real Japanese university experience.

Teaching & grading

Toyo professors utilize lecture and discussion formats. Although questions are encouraged, it is unusual for students to disagree with professors. Japanese is the primary language of instruction for most courses. However, Toyo also offers a wide selection of courses taught in English. Students are expected to attend at least 2/3 of the classes for each course.

Toyo University uses a 5-scale grading system. Grade equivalencies are presented in the table below.
